Most Scottsdale homeowners start by searching for a water softener. What many don’t realize is that our municipal water contains both hardness minerals and disinfectants like chlorine or chloramines.
A combination system removes hardness while also reducing chlorine, delivering more complete protection for your plumbing, appliances, and water quality.
Zest Plumbing & Drain installs locally built combination systems engineered specifically for Arizona water conditions.
Scottsdale water presents two primary challenges:
Hardness minerals cause scale buildup. Disinfectants can impact water quality and shorten softener lifespan.
A properly configured combination system addresses both. Without carbon filtration, chlorine can gradually degrade softener resin. Without softening, hardness minerals continue to build scale inside plumbing systems. Together, they provide balanced protection.
A water softener removes:
Carbon filtration reduces:
Each system solves a different problem, and they work best together.
We offer two primary configurations:
Integrated Combination Units or Side-by-Side Carbon + Softener Systems
Both approaches:
System configuration depends on:
We size and configure systems properly based on your home’s specific conditions. Pairing your combination Softener & Carbon system with one of our High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis drinking water systems will give you excellent water quality you can feel great about.
Not all Whole Home Water Filtration systems are designed for Scottsdale water. Our combination Softener & Carbon systems are built locally using only the most durable materials selected to withstand:
We use:
We do not install undersized systems that struggle under real-world use.
Chlorine gradually breaks down water softener resin over time.
By reducing disinfectants before water enters the softener tank, carbon filtration helps:
For many homeowners, this means fewer long-term repairs and better performance consistency.
The single-tank softener and regenerating carbon combo, $3,998 installed, carries our 6-Year “You Don’t Write a Check” Warranty. Two-tank systems, a softener with a separate carbon tank, carry our 10-Year “You Don’t Write a Check” Warranty. Both cover parts and labor for non-maintenance-related failures.
If a covered component fails under normal operating conditions, you won’t be writing a check for the repair.
Maintenance items and improper pressure conditions are excluded. Systems must operate within plumbing code and manufacturer pressure guidelines. Ask about our Zest Protection Plan to help protect your plumbing system.

A combination system may be ideal if:
During your water evaluation, we’ll explain whether a standalone softener or a full combination system makes more sense.
Scottsdale water contains both hardness minerals and disinfectants. Addressing only one may leave part of the problem untreated. Schedule your water evaluation today and let us design a properly sized combination system built specifically for Arizona conditions.
A water softener removes hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, through ion exchange. It does not remove chlorine, chloramines, or the taste and odor compounds that come with treated municipal water. A carbon filter removes those disinfectants but does not address hardness at all. Scottsdale’s water presents both problems simultaneously, it runs 16 to 20 grains per gallon in hardness and is disinfected with chlorine or chloramines before it reaches your home. A standalone softener leaves the disinfectants untreated. A standalone carbon filter leaves the hardness untreated. A properly configured combination system addresses both in a single installation, providing more complete protection for your plumbing, appliances, and water quality than either system can deliver on its own.
Chlorine and chloramines in municipal water gradually break down the resin beads inside a water softener. The resin is what performs the ion exchange that removes hardness, and once it degrades, the softener becomes progressively less effective at doing its job. In a home without carbon filtration, every gallon of chlorinated water passing through the softener is slowly shortening its useful life. Installing a carbon filter upstream of the softener removes disinfectants before they reach the resin, which protects the resin from chemical degradation and extends the life of the softener. For homeowners who have already invested in a water softener, adding carbon filtration is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect that investment long-term.
Both configurations deliver the same result, hardness removal combined with chlorine and chloramine reduction, but they achieve it differently. An integrated combination unit houses both treatment functions in a single compact system, which is well-suited for homes with limited mechanical room space. A side-by-side installation uses separate tanks for the softener and carbon filter, positioned next to each other with the carbon filter plumbed upstream so it treats the water before it reaches the softener resin. Side-by-side systems are often easier to service independently since each component can be maintained or replaced without affecting the other. We recommend the configuration that fits your space, your household demand, and your long-term maintenance preferences after evaluating your home’s specific conditions.
Proper sizing accounts for several factors specific to your household and your water supply. Household size and daily water usage determine the flow rate the system needs to handle without pressure drop. Scottsdale’s water hardness, which runs 16 to 20 grains per gallon, determines the grain capacity required of the softener component and how frequently it will need to regenerate. Chloramine levels in the municipal supply affect the carbon media type and volume needed for effective disinfectant reduction. Space availability in the mechanical room determines whether an integrated or side-by-side configuration is more practical. An undersized combination system will not keep up with real household demand, will regenerate too frequently, and will exhaust carbon media faster than it should. We evaluate all of these factors before recommending a system rather than defaulting to a one-size answer.
The single-tank softener and carbon combo carries a 6-year You Don’t Write a Check Warranty and the two-tank system, a softener with a separate carbon tank, carries 10 years. Both cover parts and labor for non-maintenance-related failures. If a covered component fails under normal operating conditions within the warranty period, we handle the repair or replacement without a service call charge or unexpected bill. Maintenance items such as salt, filter media replacement, and resin service are excluded from warranty coverage, as are failures caused by operating outside normal pressure parameters or plumbing code requirements. We explain exactly what is covered before installation so you know what you are getting into before committing to anything. The Zest Protection Plan is also available to help keep maintenance on schedule and protect coverage.
With proper maintenance, a well-built combination system installed correctly for your household’s demand should perform reliably for 10 to 15 years or more. The softener resin, which is the most important component in the softener side of the system, lasts significantly longer when protected from chlorine and chloramines by the upstream carbon filter. Without that protection, resin can degrade in as few as five to seven years in a chloramine-treated water supply. The carbon media needs periodic replacement depending on the system type, regenerating carbon systems extend media life significantly compared to standard carbon tanks. Control valves, which manage the regeneration cycles for both components, are the most mechanically complex part of the system and benefit most from annual inspection to catch wear before it becomes a failure.
